HAMILTON TEARS THROUGH REGIONALS

Staff Report 07/28/2008

BETHLEHEM, N.Y. - The Hamilton Lou Gehrig team dominated play in the PONY Mid-Atlantic Regional just outside of Albany this weekend.

Even with leadoff batter Anthony Verderese unable to play after breaking his wrist while playing for Broad Street Park American Legion Post 313 this summer, the Hamilton Lou Gehrig team was able to muster enough offense to earn a berth to Zone play in Greensboro, N.C.

The Hamilton Lou Gehrig team went undefeated this weekend, winning a doubleheader on Friday to kick off Regional action.

Hamilton Lou Gehrig defeated Bethlehem Lou Gehrig, 4-0, with a strong pitching performance from David Gilsey. Casey Clark and Andy Vogt led the offensive charge with two hits apiece.

In the second game of the night, the New Jersey champions defeated the Central Meadows Lou Gehrig team, 4-3. Kyle Reed picked up the win, striking out 12 and allowing just four hits. Reed also had the game-winning RBI in the top of the seventh inning with a sacrifice fly which plated Armando Alfonso.

The Hamilton Lou Gehrig squad then edged the Amsterdam team, 6-5, yesterday in the championship game on the strength of a game-winning home run by Chris Wirth-Kenyon.

"Hamilton Lou Gehrig is looking forward to representing this area in another avenue of regional play," manager Marty Clark said.
The all-star squad will next play Wednesday night against host the Greensboro (N.C.) Lou Gehrig team.
If the team can win out of Zone play, it will advance to the Lou Gehrig PONY League World Series next month in Lafayette, Ind.
